Build a Portable Standing Desk

If you feel like you are easily distracted while you are sitting, and can be more productive when you are standing then this project is for you. Standing desks have a lot of benefits, not only do they boost your concentration, they also help reduce back pain, you can forget about your back posture while you are working. Through this article you will be able to build your own standing desk.

Since the desk is portable you can move it to different areas with ease. The desk has an electrical outlet with 2 USB ports to charge your devices. The desk also has a storage area for the power cord so you will not have to worry about the wire while you move the desk. The height of the desk can be adjusted.

Wood glue

Double stack plywood

USB outlet

Step 1

To begin making a standing desk you will first have to make the legs. The legs will be made in 2 different parts and then assembled together. You will need 2 identical planks of wood, apply some glue and then attach them together with the help of a nail gun, make sure to wipe off any excess glue on the inside and the outside, The inside needs to to be cleared so that everything can slide properly. You can then clamp it and set it aside. Now you can repeat the process for the 2nd leg.

Once both the pieces are dried you can assemble them together, use some wood glue to attach them and then secure it off with a nail gun. Make sure that there is not excess glue on the inside; this will make it harder for the adjustable wood piece to slide.

Step 2

You will now have to make a narrower version of the leg, make sure that when it is assembled it will fit into the leg made earlier. You wouldn't want it to  be too narrow and have it wobble. Once you have applied glue, nailed it and clamped it together, you can leave it to dry off.

Step 3

Now, you can move on to create the desk. For this you will need a plank of wood, the side should be big enough to fit your keyboard. You will then need to draw arcs on all four corners of the plank, this will give it curved edges. To do this you can use a protractor and create arcs on the edges and then cut it. You can sand off the edges. You can then round out the edge of the surface with a router.  You will need to repeat the process again to make another desk,

Step 4

You now need to bring back the leg that was built during step 1. Trace and cut a hold of the outlet. The hole should be big enough to fit the outlet snug. Before you move on you can test out the hole made for the outlet, to make sure that the size is right.

Once you are satisfied with the outlet cord, you can move on to make the storage space for the cord. For this you will need to mark an area below the outlet hole and drill a hole into the marked out area, you can then round off the edges of the hole.

Step 5

To make the base for the table you will need some double stack plywood. Cut 2 identical double stack plywood to a size that you find appropriate for the table and then find the centre of the base.  For this you can draw a diagonal line from both sides and then place the leg over the area where both the lines meet. Then trace out the area for the leg and cut it out of the base. Then fix the leg into the hole and check if it fits perfectly.  Drill some pocket holes into the base to attach it more securely to the leg.  You then need to round off the leg surface, make sure to leave the area that will be inserted into the table square. Sand out all the wood components of the desk.

Step 6

Now you will have to drill holes into both the legs to make it adjustable. You need to be extremely careful and accurate while drilling holes . Place both the legs and drill it together, make sure the narrow leg is placed at a height you find comfortable.

You will then need to build a stop, so that the wood does not slide all the way in. you can attach a block of wood inside, at the area you want the inner leg to stop.

Next, mark the location for the additional holes. Install the leg into the base and flip it,  attach the 2nd plywood to the base. You then can attach casters onto the base.

Step 7

You then need to make a height for the desk that is suitable for you. For this you will need to make panels for the neck.  Cut and attach some wood at the bottom and top part of the neck.

Use a finish of your choice to paint the desk.

You will then need to mount the desk on the panels for this you will need to find the centre on the desk and the centre of the neck. You can then screw the desk to the panels.

You then need to insert a bolt onto the legs so that the neck can be adjusted.

Lastly you can screw the outlet to the leg and insert the cord into the storage area. The standing table is now ready.
