DIY wooden sunglasses from scratch

Have you ever wanted to make your very own wooden sunglasses instead of buying expensive plastic sunglasses from the market that break easily within a few months? If yes, we have the perfect DIY project for you! Learn how to make sturdy, one of kind, and inexpensive wooden glass in just eight simple steps! Read more to find out how it is made.

Products needed for this DIY project:

1.      Sunglasses

2.      2 x 4

3.      Veneer

4.      Maple

5.      Band saw

6.      Screws

7.      Lenses

8.      Spray lacquer

9.      Glue

10.   Clamps

Let’s get started with our DIY project!

Step 1:

First, take a piece of 2 x 4 wood and trace the basic outline of the top of the main body of the sunglasses on it. Draw a line through the center and cut along that line to make two halves using a band saw. This will help in giving the sunglasses a curved shape just like regular sunglasses.

Step 2:

Take three sheets of veneer and trace out the main body of the sunglasses on all three sheets. You also need to pop the lenses out of the sunglasses and trace them too. Cut out the center lens portion of two of the sheets of veneer along the lines and cut the third one just a little bigger so as to give the lens a space to fit in.

Step 3:

Stick all three pieces of veneer together using a generous amount of glue. Once all the three pieces are glued together, put this whole structure between the two pieces of 2 x 4 we had cut earlier and clamp the whole thing down. Use as many clamps as you want because we need to make sure that the veneer is packed tight into the space. Only then will it become curved like regular sunglasses.

Step 4:

While the veneer structure is getting ready, let’s work on the earpieces of the glasses. Trace the earpieces of a piece of maple and cut them out using a band saw. It is important that both these earpieces are symmetrical so that your sunglasses aren’t lopsided.

Step 5:

Now it’s time to remove the main body of the sunglasses from the clamps. After they have achieved your desired shape, cut the main body of the sunglasses using a band saw. Then sand all the edges of the main body and the earpieces of the sunglasses to give it a nice and finished look free of any rough edges.

Step 6:

Let’s attach the earpieces to the main body of the sunglasses. For this, draw two lines on the edge of the main body where the earpieces will be fixed and extend the two lines over to the earpieces too. Cut these two lines: for the main body cut outside the lines and for the earpieces cut inside the lines so that one of them can fit into the other. Sand both the pieces down to achieve your desired design. Repeat the same process on the other side of the sunglasses too.

Step 7:

Now you need to take a small drill bit and drill a small hole through the edges of the sunglasses where you just made the cuts as well as the earpieces. Then simply take a screw, interlock the main body and the earpieces, and put the screw through all the holes to secure it in place.

Step 8:

For the final step you need to spray your wooden sunglasses with some spray lacquer to give them a nice and finished look. Then insert the lenses into the sockets. You may have to bend the lenses a little to make them fit but don’t tug on them too hard.

Your wooden sunglasses are now complete! Did you ever imagine that you would ever be able to make your own sunglasses? Now that we get colored lenses in the market you could customize your sunglasses to make them look funky by putting the lenses with the color of your choice in them. Enjoy your latest creation!
