How to make your very own wooden file box

If you’re someone who usually has to file a lot of paperwork and finds it difficult to stay organized, this DIY is perfect for you. Rather than buying a flimsy plastic file from the market, why don’t you make your own wooden file box that can be completely customized according to your needs! Don’t worry, we’re with you every step of the way by showing you the easiest way to do this DIY project. Read more to find out how it is made.

Products needed for this DIY project:

1.      Plywood

2.      Pinewood

3.      Table saw

4.      Sanding machine

5.      Wood glue

6.      Files

Let’s get started with our DIY project!

Step 1:

The first step is to cut the wood to the appropriate lengths to make the file box. We will be using half-inch plywood for this project. The length of the file box will be a little over the length of the files you want to place in the said file box. The width will be determined on the basis of how many files you want to place in the file box. And the height of the file box will be a little over the width of the files. You are advised to take all the appropriate measurements first and then make cut the four pieces of wood accordingly using a table saw. We will also need two more pieces for the top and bottom of the file box.

Step 2:

We will be using an overlapping system to attach the side panels of this wooden file box. For this purpose, you need to cut a small slot at the front and back of all the side pieces using a table saw set to the right height. Then you need to turn the pieces around and make another cut to form rabbets on both the sides of all the side pieces. Using some glue, put these pieces together carefully. If you’ve cut the rabbets correctly, all the pieces should fit right in place. Also, stick the top and bottom panels by using some glue and hammering them into place. Use some clamps to hold the whole box together while the glue dries.

Step 3:

After the glue dries, we will be cutting the top of the box to form the lid. You can do this easily by using a table saw and running each side through the saw to make a clean cut. Using some pine wood, cut a 1/8” strip and then further cut this long strip into four pieces depending on the measurements of the inside of the lid of our file box. Stick these pieces onto the inside of the lid of the file box properly so that the lid drops in place perfectly.

Step 4:

Once this is done, sand down the entire surface of your wooden file box to eliminate any rough edges, get rid of any glue squeeze-out and give the wooden file box a smooth finish.

Step 5:

Your wooden file box is pretty much completed now but if you want to go the extra mile you can even make two side hangers for your files to hang from. This will be made using pine wood cut to length again depending on the width of the box. You then need to cut a small slot into the two pieces just like the slots made in step 2. Now, all that’s left to do is stick these two pieces on the side of your wooden file box and hang your files in place!

Your very own wooden file box is now complete. You can personalize this in any way that you want by either painting it, applying a natural wood stain, or doing absolutely anything your heart desires. What is so unique about DIY projects is that you can customize them in any way, shape, or form that you want so let your imagination run wild. Enjoy your latest creation!
